As an instructional designer, I strive to view my work through three separate lenses. Each of the three lenses should be considered to ensure an effective online course development.
Embracing the Student
During development, it’s important to carefully consider how students learn and what materials and methods will most effectively help them achieve their goals. I keep the student at the center of development, and integrate principles of universal design so that content can be accessed, understood and utilized by all. Educational tools should be designed, created, and delivered to meet the needs of all learners. I am committed to creating personalized, meaningful experiences for all learners that ultimately help them achieve their education and professional goals.
Embracing the Faculty Developer
Collaboration and partnership are key to a successful course development. I strive to build relationships with faculty, and coach them into utilizing best practices and instructional strategies that meet the needs of learners. I work to showcase their experience, expertise, and enthusiasm for learning in their course development. I believe it’s important to emphasize personality and humanity in online course design.
Embracing Innovation and Creativity
I believe in active learning and creating opportunities for students to actively participate through reading, writing, problem-solving, and discussion rather than passively listening to instruction. As technology evolves, more opportunity is available to embrace an active learning ecosystem. Online course development should always be cutting-edge and forward-thinking. Since new technologies and strategies are constantly evolving, design should be reflective and purposeful.
