Foster Development: New Foster Orientation

The course includes pages of content, custom videos, embedded professional videos, and a series of participation quizzes. All new fosters participate in the online course within 60 days of becoming an approved foster. The orientation session covers GPG’s culture, policies, and procedures; as well as how to properly handle a foster dog to make their stay in a home more comfortable for everyone. Gateway Pet Guardians Program Director Laura Nelson comments about that use of the New Foster Orientation:

 

 

“As Program Director for Gateway Pet Guardians, I am tasked with leading the Foster Team. A vital component in developing these fosters is having them attend a foster orientation class that outlines and explains policies, procedures, etc. Recently we noticed a decline in attendance at these in-person trainings due to scheduling conflicts and geographic constraints. I reached out to Janet Roberts to help create an online, virtual training that would allow our fosters to acquire the information needed but in a form more convenient to them. Janet was instrumental in identifying and creating the content needed to allow our fosters to be successful. Janet considered the varying ‘learning styles’ of individuals and created videos and quizzes to promote interactivity. The result has been amazing! Fosters are trained immediately upon approval and they are more equipped to tackle the daily challenges that come with fostering dogs and cats. This experience has been so successful, we have asked Janet to help coordinate similar trainings for our other volunteers.”
